Cannock Successes

Thanks to everyone for making this a great day. Don't know about you but we enjoyed organising and planning this event. No incidences were reported and everybody arrived back in one piece although there had been at least one trip over the handlebars. Dave surveyed the area 3-4 weeks before the event and then went in the week before to make final checks. To his surprise and pleasure the foresters had been busy building another kilometre of single track MTB trails. This was duly added to the map and the courses changed to take full advantage of as much of those great tracks as possible. Makes navigating and even staying on your bike challenging but guess that's what it's all about - although I think some of you were a bit shaken and stirred by the time you finished.
Competition was stiff as some of the best mountain bike orienteers came along to battle it out for selection for the World Champs in Ballarat, Australia and we hope that it gave them some really relevant MTBO practice. Well done again to Steve Heading who slipped in ahead of Killian Lomas by 44 seconds to take another first place. Well done to Mike Browell who had a convincing win in the Men's 50+ class taking the lead by over 5 minutes. Dave Rose will never know if he could have beaten that time as he moved up a class to try himself against the youngsters in the men's 40+. Helen Winskill came in on her first event this year to win by over 1.5 minutes. Helen was trying her orienteering out on 2 wheels for a change. She is a member of the British team for the European Orienteering Championships in July.
EMIT had a new system for us all to try - first time it had been trialled outside of Norway - and thanks to everyone who completed a questionnaire for the IOF. The control receivers certainly make it easier/lighter for the organisers although Dave then had to put stakes in the ground which is much harder than just putting a box on the ground. For the riders who have done the previous events it did mean you had to cycle closer to the controls but I'm sure for anyone who's tried Trailquests with Sport ident it's still much easier than having to get off your bike at every control. But it all takes getting used to and we appreciate everyone's efforts to make it work.
The award for the happiest person of the day goes to Helen Snowball who's enthusiam at the finish was a delight. Rumour is that she enjoyed it.
